Ann Romney Slams Obama

Ann Romney, wife of the probable Republican candidate Mitt, has struck out at Obama and left the classic Republican primary-wife role behind. At her husband’s side on the set of This Morning CBS, she accused the Obama campaign of having only one objective: “Kill Mitt.” It’s not every day one sees a candidate’s wife acting like Calamity Jane. Have Mitt and Ann created a communications strategy where the spouse sheds the arm-candy role — good wife, good mother, ready for everything — to become a little like…Sarah Palin, Ms. “Spiteful,” which is evidently more chic?

Since the airing of This Morning CBS, America understands that Ann Romney has a new role alongside probable Republican candidate Mitt Romney. She strikes out under her husband’s softened gaze. By clearly accusing Obama’s campaign of having only the “kill Mitt” objective, she leaves behind the classic social role of the enamored follower. Furthermore, the violence of the terms she uses is new coming from the mouth of a presidential candidate’s wife. Michelle Obama was retired to the background during the 2008 campaign for much less. But among Republicans and after Ms. “Spiteful” Sarah Palin, there is undoubtedly a niche to explore in this style.

Much more skilled than Michelle Obama. Flotus* has always obliged to tone down her personality and minimize her role so that she didn’t take up too much of the scene. Michelle’s position as the president’s wife, mother of Malia and Sasha, proponent of military families and leader of the adolescent anti-obesity campaign, meant she has cold-shouldered all aggressive-minded policies during the first term in order to support her husband’s politics. What trouble there would have been if she had taken on board Ann’s terms regarding Romney!

All-round a bit more daring. These violent words are surely going to reassure Romney’s voters for the first time of his ability to be an attacker, thanks to his interfering wife. But it may be short-lived: It’s difficult to backpedal aggressiveness and she very quickly risks being perceived as a domineering wife, while he risks appearing as a spectator in this play — in other words, weak. Yet he is the candidate. The press would not hesitate to remind him of this. And in watching the video of the program, Ann’s look has changed as well as her attitude. But the blows are only beginning.

So Nancy and Laura’s small red suit might have golden days ahead of it. Besides, during the primaries, Ann was wearing one.

*Editor’s note: Flotus (First Lady of the United States) is an acronym referring to Michelle Obama.
