Parliament Members Demand the Return of The Five to Cuba

On Thursday, parliament members of various parties in the United Kingdom called for the liberation of Cuban antiterrorists that are still being imprisoned in the United States and advocated for more energetic international actions towards this goal, reports PL.

Baroness Angela Smith of the Labor Party, the president of the All Party Group (a group of legislators from both sides of the aisle), demanded urgency during a meeting with a group of representatives from different countries who will assist the London-based International Commission of Investigation beginning today, Mar. 6.

Among the hosts was Baroness Gloria Hopper, a conservative, as well as diplomats from Scotland and Northern Ireland, who also participated with parliamentary members from Germany and Belgium. The meeting, held at the headquarters of the House of Commons, was also attended by the vice president of the European Parliament, Miguel Angel Martinez, and the former attorney general of the United States, Ramsey Clark.

Members from the Cuban side also attended, such as Ricardo Alarcón, ex-head of the National Assembly, and Kenia Serrano, delegate and president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP). The meeting was also attended by family members of The Five and victims of the terrorist actions against the Caribbean island.

Baroness Smith reported that, during the talks, an appeal was presented against the decision of the British government to not grant a visa to René González for the purpose of attending the International Commission in London.

Ricardo Alarcón maintained that the solution to the case of the three antiterrorists that remain in prison “must now be sought outside of the courts,”* and recalled that René and Fernando were freed only after exhausting all possible penalties.

Alarcón said that Guerrero would complete his sentence in 2017 and Labañino in 2024, and that “at this pace Gerardo Hernandez will die in prison” from being sentenced to two life sentences plus 15 years.*

Intervening in the meeting, Ramsey Clark pointed out that The Five traveled to the United States in order to prevent violent acts by counterrevolutionary groups residing in Florida and other actions against the dignity and lives of Cubans.

The president of ICAP thanked the British parliament members for their work in the name of the Cuban antiterrorists and requested that the members of the British parliament group carry to Washington the conclusions that the international commission adopts.
