The Downturn of the Republican Party

Its profile as a national party has been replaced by a highly personality-based one, that of Trump, which has taken a toll on some of its internal coherence.

The emergence of Donald Trump as the head of the Republican Party has led to a diminishing of traditional values, those that historically fueled the conservative party, thus substantially reversing the nation’s progress. Its profile as a national party has been replaced by a highly personality-based one, impacting much of its internal coherence. It has been ravaged by economic isolationism and protectionism, incompatible with the party’s traditional ideology — once a road map with aspirations held by the world’s leading power. This disconcerting erosion has finally unsettled its foundation and electorate to the point that the party’s main beams have fallen into disrepair.

The fact that Trump, who faces more than 90 charges against him and four open judicial processes, still holds almost a 50-point lead over Ron DeSantis, second in voter preference, is a snapshot of the Republican Party’s downturn.
