Useless

While in Guatemala, the Minister of the Interior stated that information regarding reduction of U.S. assistance to the Interagency Task Force was misinterpreted and that [the assistance] continues because the two countries presently are experiencing the best moments in their history of cooperation. Not only does the Department of Defense in Washington deny this, but also the White House itself announced last night, according to reports from ABC News, the end of all aid to the Northern Triangle countries* because “they do nothing to stop the migration,”**ordering the Department of State to implement the cessation of this aid.

From Donald Trump’s perspective, governments that do nothing to stop the flow of immigrants, his key campaign issue on his path to reelection in late 2020, end up being useless, not only for his own purposes, but in general to confront the social, political and economic problems that drive out this immense number of people whose only vision for the future is migration.

The United States has taken a long time to understand that serious agreements cannot be made with corrupt governments that are only interested in plundering public resources. Governments that do not pay any attention to the problems at the root of migration and that are addicted to plundering public funds completely disregard their obligations toward their citizens, who remain without security, health and education. This causes their pessimistic vision of the future, throwing them into the arms of smugglers who promise to make the so-called American dream come true.

The inefficiency of our institutions is neither accidental nor a passing phenomenon, because while the political depravity of the political system persists, all institutions concentrate only upon satisfying their corrupt members. Thus, the huge social gap existing in the Northern Triangle of Central America translates into an increase of poverty, bringing about frustration and despair that forces people to undertake the harsh adventure of the journey to the United States with the hope of generating enough income to attain better standards of living for themselves and their families.

The description of our governments as useless, unable to address the root cause of a migration that is becoming unstoppable, is a harsh blow since this is supposed to be the best moment in relations with U.S. authorities.

*Editor’s note: The Northern Triangle refers to the countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
