The Tea Party: Hitler Is Back!

Two weeks ago, Glenn Beck had wanted to have his “Restoring Honor” rally under the sign of religion and tolerance. Sunday, during their “March on Washington,” the tea party kept their smooth and wise image at bay and brought out their anti-Obama posters and provocative slogans.

“We are out to burst Obama’s government,” one sign stated.*

With a month and a half until the “midterms,” several thousand of the tea party militants have restarted the protest machine: less governmental intervention, more liberty, less taxes, denunciation of health care reform.

“I came to protect the future of my children which has been put in danger by the government’s policies,” explained Wendy Bloedt, who had already spoken at the Glenn Beck rally and who made the round-trip from Georgia this past weekend.*

Beyond the habitual partisan rhetoric, the demonstration was an occasion to once again feed the rumors and conspiracy theories that have shaken the White House all summer.

“Where is the birth certificate?”* demanded one streamer. “Don’t believe the liberal media!” exclaimed posters from the group “Tellthetruth2010.”

Certain defamatory posters that the heads of this movement have banned, in order to avoid arguments with Democrats, have since reappeared.

“If we don’t prevent the government from extending its control over its citizens, we’ll soon be living under a Nazi regime,” affirmed Jacob Johnson, who held a portrait of Barack Obama — with a Hitler mustache.*
