Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and U.S President-elect Barack Obama discussed by telephone Thursday night, “the need to push the peace process forward.” And according to the statement issued on Friday by Olmert’s office, “the Prime Minister and Obama agreed on the need to continue advancing the peace process while preserving Israel’s security."

“The two leaders also spoke about the long friendship between the United States and Israel and the need to strengthen this friendship,” the statement added.

This is the first telephone call between Olmert and the future U.S. President.
