Former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar considers Barack Obama’s victory in the United Sates presidential elections "a historical first and a predictable economic disaster."
In the same interview, Aznar defended George W. Bush, calling him a "grand statesman" that is living in his farewell "the hour of ingratitude."
These declarations took place in an interview with Vanity Fair Magazine, a broad report in which Aznar tells the account of his life as a university professor, lecturer and counselor of the Murdoch group.
With this, the former prime minister assures that Obama’s victory is "the test of the existing American dream, through many of the Americans make an effort to say that the crisis has ended with him."
"Obama is a person of African American race and has become the President of the United States, which is an extraordinary change for them," he said.
Nevertheless, in another part of the interview, speaking about the Democrat's victory, he describes it as "a historical first and a predictable economic disaster."
Aznar also denied that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had an important responsibility in the defeat of the Republican candidate, Sen. John McCain, pointing out that she is a woman who can have "a great political future" because she has "solid convictions."
He explained that, in his opinion, Spain lacks political leadership, even though he does not give any names. "It is certain that a crisis of leadership exists right now in Spain that has not existed in years," he says.
Aznar also referred to the war in Iraq and maintained that "he has never regretted sending the troops." "I would regret not having done it. The easy thing is to look for excuses, the difficult thing is fulfilling the duty. I did what my sense of responsibility ordered me to do," he reveals.
