On May 30, the 5th annual conference of the Institute for National Security Studies took place in Tel Aviv, but most of the discussion about the goings-on in Iran, 1,600 km to the east, was directed to the west, toward a more distant target: Washington.
The forthcoming months are going to be the most critical. All those in charge, whether supportive of an attack on Iran or not, want the U.S. to side with Israel. A mini-battle is taking place behind the scenes. The Americans don't want to see a nuclear attack on Iran, or a surprise attack such as Israeli attack planes heading toward the target.
When Washington realized that Israel had not only begun to deliberate regarding an attack, but also prepared a detailed plan, they knew they needed to get to work.
This activity was meant to prevent the Israeli plan (which has probably already made some improvements) from being discovered. While some details about Israel’s preparations were leaked, the purpose of which we can only imagine, the U.S. Government began to threaten Iran with sanctions and lead the Iranian regime to the negotiation.
The leaders of the U.S. understand that this is the only way to delay, and maybe even stop, the Israeli attack. As long as they continue in this manner, there's a good chance that the Israelis will wait, observe and see where things are heading without rushing underground and initiating the dramatic operation. Otherwise, nothing will stop Israel.
It is well known in Jerusalem that the missile waiting on the F-15 urges the Americans and the world to apply active diplomacy. A conference like this most recent one serves as a reminder that the end is near.
