*Editor’s note: On March 4, 2022, Russia enacted a law that criminalizes public opposition to, or independent news reporting about, the war in Ukraine. The law makes it a crime to call the war a “war” rather than a “special military operation” on social media or in a news article or broadcast. The law is understood to penalize any language that “discredits” Russia’s use of its military in Ukraine, calls for sanctions or protests Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It punishes anyone found to spread “false information” about the invasion with up to 15 years in prison.

Political analyst Sergey Markov says the “Epstein client list” is really just a figure of speech.

Political analyst Sergey Markov told NEWS.ru that the so-called “Epstein client list” — rumored to contain the names of wealthy and influential clients of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein — is more a figure of speech than an actual document. Markov said it’s more accurate to view it as a collection of internal contact lists used by managers to keep track of clients.

“A manager needs to know who they’re calling if they’re offering certain types of entertainment,” Markov explained.

Markov suggested that everyone who attended Epstein’s notorious parties — he was accused of trafficking minors and forcing them into prostitution — feared being exposed. Nevertheless, he said, they had strong incentives to attend.

“First, many of the people on that list were perverts. When they heard through acquaintances that Epstein was offering certain services and no one was complaining, they thought, ‘Why not?’ Second, it was a pass into an exclusive circle bound by mutual secrecy. There you could gain access to some of the most powerful and wealthy people in the world,” Markov said.

Earlier, the Associated Press reported that former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have been subpoenaed to testify in the Epstein case. Former FBI Directors James Comey and Robert Mueller, along with six former federal prosecutors, have also been summoned for questioning.
