Harris Is Relying Entirely on Teamwork with Walz in the Election Campaign
Kamala Harris' decision not to go to the CNN studio alone for an interview is not a sign of weakness. She understands the strengths of her partnership with Tim Walz.
“Kamala-mania” is still going strong in the U.S. Nevertheless, it is high time for the presidential candidate to head to the TV studio and talk about her concrete plans, as she has largely failed to mention them so far. Her insistence on answering CNN's questions together with her running mate Tim Walz, rather than alone, drew much surprise and criticism. Is Harris afraid? Is she too weak on her own?
Nonsense. Joe Biden also gave his first interview as the Democratic nominee in August 2020 alongside his running mate, Kamala Harris. Donald Trump's current stream of solo interviews could be interpreted as a provocation. But Harris and Walz are not deterred by this. They have been explicitly emphasizing team spirit and teamwork for weeks — a stark contrast to Trump's extreme egomania.
A Change of Strategy
Harris, whose nomination came late — possibly too late — has to be perfect in the last nine and a half weeks leading up to the election. She knows that success in the decisive swing states depends on her teamwork with Walz. A solo appearance on CNN is therefore not an option because opportunities to reach an audience of millions are rare.
The strategy must be completely different in the TV debate with Trump in a few days' time, however. This will be a veritable showdown between a former public prosecutor and a convicted criminal. Will he pull out after all?
