Today, Harper Lee’s second book was released, “Go Set a Watchman.” The sequel has been controversial and there may be a third script.
In the United States, reactions to the sequel to the classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” were shocking as Harper Lee portrays the protagonist, Atticus Finch, as a racist.
But the controversy does not end there. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Harper Lee’s lawyer, Tonja Carter, hints that there may have been a third script related to the original book found in a safety deposit box, although the script may be considered to be an early draft of one of the books, she says.
“Go Set A Watchman” was released today, July 14, as an e-book in Swedish, and translator Eva Johansson told the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet that she reacted similarly to the American critics when reading the script.
“It’s a bit as if you were to discover there was another book to “The Emigrants” series in which Karl-Oskar’s character was turned upside down. This is bigger, however,” said Johansson.
Johansson believes that the reactions are so strong because it shows the first book, and Atticus Finch, in a dark light.
“When one reads “To Kill a Mockingbird,” I think one will see him as a person with a passion for the law and jurisprudence, but not for human rights.“
