Uruguay at US-Led Conference on Political Terrorism: Unacceptable and Regrettable
Uruguay’s presence at the so-called “Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism,” recently held in Washington, D.C. and organized by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was totally unacceptable.
In his speech at the conference, Marco Rubio, the man responsible for the Donald Trump government’s foreign policy, made direct reference to Tupamaros, the Uruguayan guerrilla group known as the National Liberation Movement (Movimiento de Liberación Nacional), in addition to Marxist and communist ideologies as examples of serious threats.
The international conference brought together a large number of countries governed by the far-right. Rubio represents a government that explicitly disregards multilateralism and is guilty of pursuing illegal wars and extrajudicial assassination. Furthermore, it has carried out kidnappings and threatened to use force by invading sovereign nations.
Just as he did with international drug cartels and organized crime, Rubio likened a political movement that is integral to Uruguay’s governing party to Marxist and communist principles, implying that they are one and the same, and threats to the international community.
It is without even the slightest ounce of doubt that, amid this historic ongoing transformation of global hegemony, asymmetrical relations are much more difficult to navigate. It is also clear that the defense of international law and legitimacy of the United Nations Charter are indispensable responsibilities for Uruguay, even in complex scenarios that carry obvious risk.
Yet even in terms of basic national dignity, it is unquestionably unacceptable that Uruguay was present at this conference. This doesn’t just affect the government, but also seriously harms the best tradition of foreign policy that this country has to offer.
Attempts to justify this with reference to the ranking of the Uruguayan representative present constitute a lack of respect towards the country’s citizens. Those responsible for taking this decision are responsible for an affront to our national sovereignty.
The Uruguayan flag was clearly visible at the conference. This was a truly regrettable decision.
