The 10 years that have passed since 9/11 have been painful for Muslims. The world’s superpowers, just as the wicked pharaohs and Nimrod in Islamic/biblical accounts, wanted to rule the world, but their plans have been far from successful. According to the Quran, Nimrod [who gave orders to construct the tower of Babel] was punished when God sent a mosquito into his head; this mosquito brought Nimrod’s downfall.
According to the Islamic and biblical account, God sent a plague of mosquitoes in Nimrod’s direction. They attacked him and sucked his blood; one of them entered his brain through his nose. For the next 400-800 years (depending on which account we believe), Nimrod was constantly tormented by the movement of this mosquito in his brain. This mosquito brought Nimrod’s death. This man, who used to think of himself as God, was brought down by a mosquito. Similarly, the wicked Pharaoh and his men drowned when the sea closed in on them after Moses escaped.
God bless America, for it has many Muslims residing in it — Muslims who can show the path of light to those on the path of darkness. I mentioned the religious accounts above to show that powerful men (who deemed themselves gods and made slaves of Muslims) were destroyed, while Islam still prevails all these years later.
9/11, however, created many problems for Muslims. Muslims still face the same discrimination now that they did soon after 9/11. According to one survey, some 270,000 Muslims in America have been discriminated against because of America’s post-9/11 anti-terrorism policies.
President Obama has to run for re-election in 2012. His popularity seems to be slipping as a result of the high rate of unemployment; he has even lost the support of 27-28 percent of Democrats. Despite these facts, 72 percent of American Muslims still support Obama.
After the killing of Osama bin Laden, every American has one question on his or her mind: Is America safe now? The answer, of course, is no. U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has said that there is a strong possibility of another large, 9/11-like terrorist attack on American soil. In a speech he gave during his visit to New York, Panetta stated that al-Qaida has spread to other regions of the world, despite the fact that America has killed Osama bin Laden and several of al-Qaida’s key operatives in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Yemen has now become a key place for al-Qaida operations.
9/11 has adversely affected Pakistan in many ways, but its negative impact on America cannot be discounted. As a result of America’s War on Terror, 6,200 American soldiers have been killed. In Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq, hundreds of thousands of civilians have been massacred. In Pakistan alone, 35,000 people have been killed; we have seen more than 290 suicide attacks in which 4,600 have been killed, and 10,000 have been injured. We have also incurred damages in the amount of $67 million in our society as a result of these attacks. 119,044 individuals have been arrested around the world on charges of terrorism; 35,000 of these individuals have been convicted and imprisoned.
Pakistan had nothing to do with 9/11, but America has treated us so badly since that day that every day in this country today is like a 9/11 for its people. No day has passed in Pakistan since 9/11 when an innocent has not been killed. Our friendship with America has turned sour. They spent $22 billion on their security after 9/11. On this 10th anniversary of 9/11, America and Pakistan must collectively reflect and ask themselves what they gained and lost over this past decade. If you ask most Muslims, they will tell you that these superpowers, acting like the egotistical Nimrod, have disrupted the peace and order of this world.
