Trump Could Soon Stand Alongside Putin

The United States no longer stands with Ukraine, despite all the efforts of the Ukrainian president. And things could get even worse. Europe should prepare for the possibility that Donald Trump will openly side with anti-Western dictators.

Under Donald Trump, the United States is no longer a reliable partner. Not for Ukraine, and not for other European countries. The signs have been there for a long time. By now, everyone should have gotten the message.

According to reports from Kyiv, the Trump administration is apparently withholding munitions and intelligence data that Ukraine has already paid for thereby violating existing contracts. This is making it even harder than it already was for Ukraine's air defenses to intercept deadly Russian missiles and drones. U.S. officials falsely claim that Ukraine's president is responsible for the fact that there is still no peace, and yet praise Vladimir Putin, a war criminal.

Zelenskyy Has Spent Months Courting the US

Yet Volodymyr Zelenskyy has done absolutely everything he could to keep Trump on board. For months, he has put up with the U.S. president's shameless behavior. As recently as last week, when Trump announced a supposed ceasefire targeting energy facilities without first consulting the Ukrainians, Ukraine accommodated him by refraining from attacking Russia's oil industry for several days. All this despite Russia striking dozens of Ukrainian energy facilities during the same period. Nothing came of it.

Over the weekend, Zelenskyy acted accordingly. Ukraine launched its most powerful attack yet on St. Petersburg. It did so using its own weapons, developed with European support, and without any help from the United States. In doing so, Ukraine once again proved that Russia is vulnerable. At the same time, Zelenskyy acknowledges that Ukraine could not hold out if the United States openly sides with Russia. He hopes U.S. policy will shift in Ukraine's favor after the midterm elections, or that Washington will at least return to a neutral position.

Europeans Must Finally Impose Tough Sanctions on Russia

It’s tempting to hope for a shift in U.S. policy after the midterm elections. But that would be reckless. After all, Trump will still be in office. Europeans now bear a greater responsibility than ever. They must finally step up their support for Ukraine. The 70 billion euros (approximately $78.4 billion) in the pipeline represents an investment in their own security. Europe must make frozen Russian assets available to Ukraine. It is unacceptable that ships belonging to Russia's shadow fleet are still free to sail in the Baltic Sea. Europe must finally put sanctions against Russia's nuclear industry on the table, too. All these measures have been called for repeatedly. How much longer will it take to implement them?

There is now talk of a summit involving Trump, Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. They would discuss Ukraine — not only without the Ukrainians, but also without the Europeans. Europeans should prepare for the possibility that Trump will switch sides and join the camp of anti-Western dictators.
