The Orange One’s Latest Lies
Donald Trump’s lies are endless. This man is a lying machine. Throughout his war against Iran, he has repeatedly appeared in the media claiming that Iranians have contacted him seeking an agreement, and that he would consider it. Meanwhile, Iranians called him a liar, denied his claims and challenged him to name a single Iranian official who had contacted him. Today he continues his lying streak, claiming that the Houthis reached out to him and asked him to stay out of the ongoing fighting in Yemen. This lie is so absurd that it lays bare his sheer stupidity. He went on to claim that he had agreed to the Houthis’ request, even as Axios reported that he had rejected a Saudi request to bomb the advancing Houthi forces as they swept across Yemen’s western coast.
The Houthis did not ask anything of Trump — it is not as if they have the kind of relationship that would warrant asking for favors. They are not allies lining his pockets with cash, nor are they buying his weapons. The only relationship they share is one marked by blood: when he bombed their country, they retaliated by targeting U.S. warships. The truth is, the U.S. president stayed out of the conflict in Yemen for purely personal reasons and reasons tied to U.S. interests.
In any case, Trump has tried to attack the Sanaa government without achieving results that would encourage him to repeat the attempt. Amid his current crisis with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, he does not want to burden his forces by opening another difficult front. Moreover, the Bab al-Mandab Strait is of little importance to the United States, with almost no U.S. trade passing through it. It is far more important to China and Japan, and even more so to Saudi Arabia. Since Trump is not known for caring about his allies’ interests, he has no problem with Saudi Arabia and Japan being harmed by a closure of the strait, so long as China is disrupted as well. He already knows that only Saudi ships would be affected, and they are of little concern to him.
The dark side of Trump’s personality makes him unwilling to forgive the Saudis for refusing, in the final stages of the war with Iran, to let him use certain bases on their territory. This forced him to move many of his aircraft to Jordan and Israel. Then there is the pent-up anger he harbors toward them for ignoring his call to join the so-called Abraham Accords. Trump only cares about Israel’s interests; as for those of his Gulf allies, he hardly gives them a thought. He is now preoccupied with the midterm elections less than two months away, whose outcome and consequences he constantly weighs and fears. Perhaps this preoccupation is what has led him to make his farcical promise to give every U.S. citizen $5,000 if his party wins.
Here we are looking at blatant electoral bribery — just like when the Muslim Brotherhood and Egypt’s National Democratic Party used to hand out sugar, oil and sandwiches to voters.
And for anyone wondering where the $1 trillion needed to fund this promise would come from, Arab pockets are deep enough to happily foot the bill.
