As Trump Heads into November
There may be nothing more futile than trying to guess what Donald Trump’s next move will be in terms of his political obsessions and goals; however, it is clear that, thus far, the failure of the war he started in Iran has forced him to shift his attention to other parts of the world and to other policies he seemed to have abandoned — at least rhetorically.
His focus has now turned toward the elections that, in a few months, will determine control of the U.S. Congress and, therefore, his room to maneuver in the last two years of his presidency.
Clear signs are emerging from those primary elections currently underway in several states replacing governors, as well as from contests that will secure other nominations before elections in November. They confirm what polls have been showing for months: Trump’s approval rating is in the gutter. That said, we must be careful not to over-interpret these data, especially because Republicans and Trump supporters are facing an increasingly-divided Democratic Party — a situation that could help Republicans secure some victories, despite their president’s low approval rating.
Immigration measures that have earned and will continue to earn conservative support are once again making media headlines in the U.S. They currently address the massive numbers of visa revocations and newly instituted measures that have increased the number of arrests and deportations.
If one of his “victories” had been the kidnapping and transfer of Nicolás Maduro, he has now returned to the Venezuelan issue with an announcement still lacking in many details. According to analysts, it appears to consist of a complicated scheme that would involve the appropriation of millions and millions of barrels of oil from the South American country — in collusion with that country’s government.
On the trade front, he has severed ties with Canada, and it remains to be seen how the renegotiation of the treaty with Mexico will play out. Although it seems to be going well, there are still many details to be worked out regarding proposals the Americans have put on the table.
Between now and November, we can expect Trump to become more “Trump” than ever — for that election will shape both his future and his legacy.
