Our America … and What Has Become of It

We Europeans grew up on American movies, music, fashion (jeans), fast food, sugary drinks and comics, and we loved it. We've been to the U.S. and soaked in San Francisco, New York, and the magnificent landscapes. Despite everything — the racial hatred, an incomprehensible election system, grotesque political phenomena, triumphantly flaunted (evangelical) piety and the politicians bought by billionaires — we still thought of the great American democracy as a reassuring bastion in a world of evil dictators. We even accepted the U.S.' warlike excesses in Vietnam because the Americans freed us from the Nazis and protected us from the Soviets back then.

But this all gives way to a growing feeling: What have you become? What on earth made you elect a pathologically ridiculous figure as your president twice, with all the countless consequences, ranging from idiotic to dangerous?

Have you actually noticed that your country has become an oligarchy of tech-bro billionaires with superhuman power fantasies? That the "idiocracy" has taken over, with crazy wars and a dysfunctional political, judicial and social system? Will you ever find your way out of this?

Unser Amerika
